It’s happened to the best of us. Or at least it’s happened to the roughly 41 percent of Americans who routinely set new year’s resolutions.

We go into it strong. We are going to lose weight. Work out more. Eat better. Save more money. Change the world one day at a time.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is, that at least according to a study done on new year’s resolutions, only about nine percent of us actually stick with it and make the changes we set out to make. What that means is that for more of us than not, things are pretty much status quo by February.

So how do you change your life for the better in the long-term? Some experts would say it starts with not putting so much pressure on the new year to make a fresh start. Instead, taking the time and energy to plan ahead can make all the difference.

Here are a few other pro tips and tricks for making those resolutions last this time around:

1. Start by picturing how the change can impact your life

Sometimes that age-old adage that seeing is believing rings true. Research shows that picturing the outcome of major life changes triggers different chemical reactions in the brain than simply jotting down a thought or idea. Visualizing the act of working out, for example, puts our minds to work in a way that should, at least theoretically, aid in the physical actions.

2. Be as smart about it as possible

Whether it happened in Psychology 101 class in college or in a continuing education course for your career, chances are you are no stranger to SMART goals.

 

The acronym promotes the idea that goals are more attainable if they are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timed. What that means in a nutshell is it’s not okay to say you’d like to lose weight.

 

Or be better at saving money. While admirable goals at the core, success is defined in the details that back those concepts up. Those who take it a step farther by saying they’d like to lose 20 pounds in 2019 by going to the gym at least three times a week are more likely to succeed than those who say they simply want to drop a few pounds.

3) Celebrate the small things

It doesn’t have to be something spectacular, but finding ways to celebrate even the smallest of milestones and recognize the steps along the way is crucial. It keeps you focused on the end goal and, perhaps even more important than that, it keeps the goal within reach.

Setting goals that are too lofty and unattainable is not a good way to start. Instead, have one bigger goal and work toward it slowly. An article in Psychology Today takes it to the next level by suggesting that you focus on the present. Have a plan, but focus your energy on a daily basis on what you can accomplish one day at a time.
